tsunami relief effort

Ongoing since 2004: US$ 242,000
Provisional               US$ 120,000

Introduction

The provisional donation is from the Indonesian National Committee of the Rotary Foundation Solidarity in Southeast Asia Fund.

After December 26, 2004, the club received many donations from Rotary Clubs and friends around the world for tsunami relief support.

vehicle purchase

Some of the funds have been used to purchase a multi purpose vehicle for transporting relief materials and for conducting a mobile library program at six barracks for refugees.

youth center

The funds have also been used to set up a Rotary Youth Center in Banda Aceh to serve as a hub for university students who are finishing their degrees. Computer lessons, English lessons and traditional dance are also taught at the center.

school computers and books

Computers for eight schools in Banda Aceh and Meulaboh were purchased as well as school books for six schools.

women’s empowerment projects

We have also funded two women’s empowerment projects in Calang, a fish drying industry reestablishment, a permaculture project and purchased several fishing boats. The club is sponsoring five impoverished university students from Calang to attend university as well.

health center - see new Update

Recently, the club decided to increase its support for Yayasan Bumi Sehat, an Ubud based birth and health center.

It has established a provisional health center in Aceh that needs improvements. The center provides free services crucial to the mother-infant survival and general health care for the 10,000 people of the Samatiga district.

The club also helps to bridge operating costs until the center finds permanent funding.

Working with the local authorities, the clinic now has a solid base in Cot Seulamat, employing and training local staff and volunteers to deliver services that are much needed in the reconstruction of their lives.

mid-wife training

The Bumi Sehat Center also provides training for local Acehnese to replace its foreign volunteers. The program trains local midwifes and traditional birth attendants as well as health care workers.
